1. Punctuation & Syntax　句読法および統語論

• スペース：単語間にスペースをいれることも句読法の一つである。
• 括弧：挿入句的な表現であり強調ではない。見出しには使わない。
• 見出しとして散見される (Embodiment 1) は、例えば、Embodiment 1, Embodiment 1, Embodiment 1, EMBODIMENT 1 が正しい。
• 英語は日本語のように助詞が無く、語句の順番で文意を表現する。技術的内容や発明の範囲を示すために語句の順番を守ることが重要である。

Who or what is doing what to what? 因果関係、DOERが何かを考える。

2. Conditional Verbal Tense　条件を表す節における動詞の時制

実施例
「たとえば透明基板１０の代わりにシリコン基板を用いた場合、窒化ガリウム薄膜と接合するシリコン基板の主表面上に、凹部（クレーター）状の欠陥が形成される可能性が高い。」

この「場合」は、conditionalなのか？そうなら、それ以降の動詞（接合する）や動詞的形容詞（高い）を仮定法にすべきである。

“Instead of the transparent substrate 10, if for example a silicon substrate is employed, the likelihood of defects in the form of pits (craters) developing on the major surface of the silicon substrate where it would be joined with a gallium nitride thin film would be high.”

3. Misplaced and Dangling Modifiers　置き換え、懸垂の修飾語句

ニュースの見出し
×Chinese Politician’s Wife Admits to Murdering Brit in Court（裁判所で殺していない）
○In Court, Chinese Politician’s Wife Admits to Murdering Brit
×Beekeeper Removes Biggest Beehive He’s Ever Seen from Cabin（キャビンで蜂の巣を見ていたわけではない）
○Beekeeper Removes from Cabin Biggest Beehive He’s Ever Seen

仮想例
「半導体ウエハーは適切なエッチング剤を用いてエッチングされ、露出表面領域からウエハーの一部が除去される。」

逐語的すぎるが、文法的には正しい訳例
As for the semiconductor wafer, a suitable etchant is employed to etch it, and a portion of the wafer is removed from the exposed {or "unmasked"} surface region.（→andに因果関係なし）

因果関係は表されているが、厳密的にはまだ文法的に正しくない訳例
The semiconductor wafer is etched employing a suitable etchant to remove a portion of the wafer from the exposed surface region.（→to removeの主語はThe semiconductor waferではない）

良い訳例
Etching the semiconductor wafer, employing a suitable etchant, removes a portion of the wafer from its unmasked surface region.

4. Functional versus Means-Plus-Function Claim Recitations　機能的クレームvs.ミーンズプラスファンクションクレーム

MPEP 2173.05(g)「それが何であるか」よりむしろ「それが何を行うか」で記載すると機能クレームとなる。

Functional Claiming
弾けさせたポップコーンのいくつかの粒のみを一度に通す円錐吐出口
（円錐吐出口は、当業者に構造として認識されている。）
-    a conical spout for passing only several kernels of popped popcorn at a time
for passing を passing, that passes, configured to pass としてもよい。

Means-Plus-Function Claiming
